Description

Pharmacological category:
Phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors

Mechanism of action of the drug:
Sildenafil is a treatment for erectile dysfunction administered orally. It restores impaired erectile function in natural situations, i.e., with sexual stimulation, by increasing blood flow to the penis.

The release of nitric oxide (NO) in the corpus cavernosum during sexual stimulation is the physiological mechanism responsible for penile erection. The enzyme guanylate cyclase is then activated, resulting in increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which relaxes the smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum and allows blood flow.

Side effects:
Headaches, heartburn, and skin redness are common side effects. People with cardiovascular problems should exercise caution. A prolonged erection (priapism), which can cause damage to the penis, eye problems, and hearing loss, is a rare but dangerous side effect. When sildenafil is combined with a nitrate-based medication, it can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. If you are taking an alpha-1 antagonist, you should not take sildenafil for at least four hours.

The concurrent use of alcohol can have serious consequences.  When consumed in excess, alcohol can cause headaches and dizziness, as well as increase or decrease heart rate and blood pressure.

Dosage:
Take 50 mg orally once daily, as needed, 1 hour before sexual activity. The maximum daily dose is 100 mg.
